4 Ways to Prepare for a Career as an LPN

It can be overwhelming and frustrating when you know what you want to do for a career, but aren’t sure how to go about making it happen. Becoming an LPN, or licensed practical nurse, is an exciting career choice, but going into a medical field often requires a significant amount of education, training, testing, and continuing education even after you get your degree or certification. But even though the road may seem long, there are clear steps that you can take to ensure that you’re prepared for a rewarding career that directly impacts the people you work with.

At AMG School of Nursing, we offer an accredited LPN program in NYC, and we are committed to the success of our students. We want to provide comprehensive education and training that ensures you have the skills necessary to achieve your career goals. Our facilities are equipped with state of the art equipment, a hands-on clinical nursing training laboratory, SIMS mannequins, and more. When you join our LPN program, you can feel confident that you’re on the best path possible.

How to Prepare For a Career as an LPN

Start Taking the Right Classes

Whether you’re in high school or jumping back into a new career, now is the best time to get started with some basic classes. Being a nurse relies on an understanding of math and science, so sign up for courses at a local community college or join AP courses in high school. This will provide you with some prerequisite education that’s necessary for you to take the next step.

Volunteer

Even if you love all of the science classes you’re taking and are positive that you want to become a nurse, volunteering at a hospital, assisted living facility, or other healthcare facility can provide invaluable experience and insight into the day-to-day schedule of a nurse. Being a nurse is a lot of hard work and requires a lot of dedication, but putting in some time now can help prepare you for when you do enroll in an LPN program. This type of experience will also look great on your application.

Research Types of Degrees

Going through an LPN program or getting an associate degree in nursing is often a first step, especially if you’re unsure of what you want to do after getting your certification. But there are a variety of different nursing specialties that you can go into. You may want to look into becoming an RN or registered nurse, a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), or Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS). The more you know about which direction you want to go in, the easier it will be to create a career path that fits your goals.

Take Tests

If you’re planning on becoming an LPN, be prepared for a lot of tests. Start by taking the HESI exam, which can gauge whether or not you will be successful in an LPN program. Many colleges use the HESI exam as a part of their admissions process. Then, once you have gone through a program, you’ll take the NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination) exam. Passing this test is required to get your nursing license.
